Human breast milk for preterm infants

Low Birth Weight

Neonatal care intensive care is complex – with advanced equipment, technical challenges and the problems these babies face. Prof. Nicholas Embleton of Newcastle University expounds on the importance one important aspect: human milk and its role in the preterm infant’s development. He highlights how breastmilk is more than food, and that nutrition goes beyond just nutrients, but also includes functional, microbial, and socio-behavioral components. He also talks about the critical role of cellular components of breastmilk, particularly, stem cells.
